I spend the last few days, setting up a dedicated NOS front-end to collect my mail. The front-end was to stay on, all day long, so I wanted to use dedicated equipment, in order to avoid problems at my normal rig, PC, power supply and TNC. I got a 386SX with 1 MB RAM, I already had a 10A power supply and an IC-229 VHF rig. All I needed was a TNC, so I opted for Baycom. I installed the small modem and made the connecting cables. However, my modulat ion was uncomprehensible, and I could not demodulate other stations. After making sure that everything was connected correctly etc, the cullprit was found to be a TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident) clock program, that I was using, to show the date and time, on the top right corner of the screen. It looks as if this program, is creating a havoc since it is stealing interupts from the system (since it is monitoring the DOS clock, thru interupts) and screwed up the Baycom transmitting and receiving capabilities. As soon as I removed the clock from memory, Baycom works fine! Another problem I faced was that, while I could do ftp at other stations, when I issued the 'dir' command, I was getting the message 'cannot read directory' (or something similar). Strangely, althought I could not see the directory contents, I could ftp a file I knew it was there. Well, it turned out that althought my environment was set up for 'SET TMP=C:\TEMP' and 'SET TEMP=C:\TEMP', a \temp directory did not exist. As soon as it was created, everything returned to normal. My 2 cents contribution.
